Passport photos in Richmond, right from home.
Richmond is my home base, so a passport photo visit here is quick to schedule — I bring the backdrop, lighting, and camera to your house, take the photo, and check it against the State Department's rules before I leave.
It's an easy way to handle a whole family at once, especially with kids or a baby who'd rather not sit in a waiting room.

How to get a photo that passes the first time
What to wear
- Wear an everyday shirt or top in a darker color like blue, black, or gray — white and light colors blend into the white background.
- No uniforms or camouflage.
- Take off hats and large jewelry. Head coverings worn daily for religious or medical reasons are fine with a signed statement, as long as they don't shadow your face.
- No glasses, sunglasses, or tinted lenses, unless you have a signed doctor's note.
Your hair
- Up or down, curly or straight — just keep it off your eyes, eyebrows, and the edges of your face.
- Bangs are fine if your eyes and eyebrows show. Pin longer bangs back with a small bobby pin.
- No big headbands, bows, clips, or scarves. Thin hair ties and plain bobby pins are fine.
- A low ponytail, bun, or braid is the easiest way to keep hair out of your face.
- Tuck your hair behind your ears. It's the simplest way to keep your face fully visible and one of the best ways to avoid a rejection.
Common questions
Does the Richmond post office take passport applications?
Not currently — the Richmond post office doesn't list passport application services. The closest post offices that do are Wilmot, just over the Wisconsin line, and McHenry. The McHenry County Treasurer's Office in Woodstock also accepts first-time applications.
Can I apply for a U.S. passport in Wisconsin if I live in Richmond?
Yes. You can turn in a first-time application at any passport acceptance facility in the country, so the Wilmot post office works just as well as one in Illinois.
